Chapter 7 — Truth & Transport
Beneath the Gallery — Small Hours
The echoes of the struggle faded, leaving only ragged breathing and the faint creak of old stone. Josh bound Hale’s wrists with heavy leather straps — steady, thorough, no room for trickery. The curator’s face was ashen, sweat mixing with dust, his fury curdled into sullen defeat. Beside him, the two henchmen lay where they’d fallen, groaning softly.
Leila knelt by the crate, lantern light soft on the golden frame. She ran careful fingers along the carved edges, checking canvas and gilding for any scratch or damage — relief settling quietly in her chest when she found none. Then she gathered the evidence: the ledger, maps, false papers, Hale’s discarded pistol. Everything stacked neatly. Nothing missed.
Pete kept watch at the tunnel entrance, ears sharp. “If Hale’s ring has other members, they may come looking before dawn. We shouldn’t linger.”
Leila rose. “You’re right. But first — we need the full truth.” She turned to Hale, green eyes unyielding. “Who else is part of this? The records show shipments across the North Sea. Who receives the cargo — and what else do they take besides art?”
Hale’s jaw tightened. “I say nothing.”
Josh leaned in, voice low. “This isn’t just art smuggling. That portrait holds family vault secrets. If they fall into the wrong hands, lives will be destroyed. You’re not protecting yourself — you’re protecting men who’d kill to stay hidden. Who are they?”
Silence stretched thick and heavy. Then — defeated, broken — Hale spoke. Names. Routes. Meeting places. It spilled out in a rush. Leila noted every word, committing it all to paper and memory. When he finished, the full shape of the conspiracy was clear. Wider, deeper, and more dangerous than any of them had imagined.
Now came the hardest part. Moving the painting, the prisoners, and the evidence — unseen — through mist-shrouded streets to safety.
Chapter 8 coming soon — the carriage rolls, and something follows in the fog.
Truth is on the move. The Stolen Legacy — Chapter 7: Truth & Transport lands tomorrow, carrying new questions, hidden motives, and revelations that refuse to stay buried. Check back here tomorrow to continue the journey—and discover what happens when secrets won’t sit still.
Authors often carry the week’s unfinished sentences into the weekend. But the Friday feeling can be something gentler: a chance to pause, take stock, and remember that a creative life needs rest as much as it needs discipline.
Three small ways to reset
Write down the next scene before you close the notebook.
Celebrate one page, paragraph, or idea that moved forward this week.
Make space for something that replenishes you: a walk, a book, or a quiet cup of coffee.
You do not have to earn rest by exhausting yourself. Let the weekend give your imagination room to breathe, and return to the page with a little more warmth on Monday.
Pip: There’s a moment in every good mystery where someone throws a crate lid at a gunman and you think — yes, that is exactly the correct response to this situation.
Mara: We’re in the world of detective156 today, covering Lucy Cordell’s latest chapter of The Stolen Legacy — a serialised mystery with a stolen portrait, a smuggling ring, and a confrontation that’s been building for six chapters.
Pip: Let’s get into the fight beneath the gallery.
The Portrait, the Pistol, and What Comes Next
Mara: Chapter 6 drops us into the climax of a chase that’s been running since the portrait disappeared — the question here is whether the team can take down Hale and recover the painting before anyone gets shot.
Pip: The answer involves improvised weaponry. Josh spots Hale raising a pistol at Leila and, with no better option, grabs a crate lid and throws it. The shot goes wild, sparks off brick, and the fight is on.
Mara: The chapter gives Leila the line that anchors the whole standoff: “Touch that painting and you die!” — voice described as “steady as steel” even with a gun in the room.
Pip: Which tells you everything about where Leila’s priorities sit. The portrait is the mission. Her own safety is, apparently, a secondary concern.
Mara: Pete handles the second henchman separately — using the man’s own weight against him, no dramatics. Then both he and Josh converge on Hale, who fights hard because, as the chapter puts it, “he knew capture meant ruin or worse.”
Pip: Hale goes down swinging — literally raking and kicking — which is the behaviour of someone with nowhere left to run.
Mara: Once it’s over, Josh delivers the reckoning directly: “Your smuggling ring, your lies, your theft — everything’s come out.” Hale says nothing. The chapter closes with Leila checking the portrait frame by frame for damage, finding none.
Pip: Small detail, that — but it’s the one that confirms the whole operation worked.
Mara: And the chapter is careful not to let the win feel complete. The final note is that the ring stretches wider than one man, which is the setup for Chapter 7.
Pip: The city closes in, apparently. I’d like to think it does so at a brisk pace, given what Hale’s been up to.
Mara: Worth noting the chapter was released to Early Access subscribers four days before general publication — so some readers already knew how this fight ended before the rest of us.
Pip: One portrait recovered, one mastermind cornered, and a smuggling ring that apparently has more floors to it.
Mara: Chapter 7 will tell us how wide it runs. That’s the one to watch.
Step into the case file with us tomorrow for the next chapter of the Detective156 podcast. Chapter 6 brings another twist, another clue, and a deeper look into the mystery.

Chapter 6 – Fight for the Portrait
Beneath the Gallery — Night
Hale’s hand flashed from his coat — pistol raised, muzzle levelling straight at Leila.
Without hesitation, Josh snatched up a heavy wooden crate lid and hurled it across the chamber. It struck Hale’s arm just as the shot cracked out — bullet whizzing wild, sparking against brick.
Ears ringing, Leila darted behind the crate holding the portrait.
Pete grappled with the second henchman — twisting, dodging, using the man’s own weight against him until he crumpled into a heap in the corner.
But Hale was tough, furious, and already cocking the hammer again.
“Touch that painting and you die!” Leila called out, her voice steady as steel.
“Too late — it’s gone!” Hale snarled, stepping closer, eyes darting for a clear shot.
Josh moved in from the side — fast and silent for his size. He struck the pistol from Hale’s grip with a sharp, precise blow, then seized the man’s shoulders.
They struggled, boots slipping on dust and stone, breath coming hard in the tight space. Hale was desperate — raking nails, kicking wildly. He knew capture meant ruin or worse.
Pete secured the last guard, then spun to help. Together they forced Hale back against the wall. He fought until his breath gave out, chest heaving, face pale and sweat-glistening.
Leila never took her eyes off the crate. She checked the portrait’s frame, edges, and canvas — relief settling quietly when she found no scratch or damage amid the chaos.
“All over,” Josh said firmly, pinning Hale’s arms. “Your smuggling ring, your lies, your theft — everything’s come out.”
Hale’s jaw tightened, eyes burning with defeated rage — but he said nothing.
The chamber fell quiet, save for ragged breathing and the faint hum of distant night air.
They had the painting, the evidence, and the mastermind. But Leila knew — this ring stretched wider than one man.
Chapter 7 coming soon — the truth spills out, and the city closes in.
