🕵️♀️ Leila Voss & Associates: The Stolen Legacy

Chapter 4 – The Hidden Passage
Glasgow – Night
Darkness swallowed the university campus. Fog clung thick to the sandstone walls, muffling every sound. Leila, Pete, and Josh met in the quietest corner of the gallery—near the empty golden frame—where shadows pooled deepest.
“Hale keeps a private office off the west corridor,” Leila whispered, her lantern shaded to a narrow beam. “And the student’s sketch showed a line ending right behind his wall. I’ve seen the way he avoids that section when others are near—too careful, too deliberate.”
Pete’s eyes glinted. “If he moved the painting inside the building first… no one would think to look where he’s meant to be safest.”
Josh tested the wall panel beside the office door—stone smooth, seamless, but for a faint, uneven groove hidden by an old display shelf. “Here.” With slow, steady pressure, he worked the edge. Stone ground softly against stone, and a narrow gap opened—cool, damp air drifting out.

Pete slipped his torch through first. “Steps… going down.”
They descended single file—Josh leading, Leila in the middle, Pete watching their rear. The passage wound beneath the gallery, rough stone unmarked, just like the vaults before. Dust coated every surface; footprints pressed deep into the powder—fresh, made by heavy boots.
The tunnel opened into a small, brick-lined chamber. At its centre sat a wooden crate, lid half-lifted. Inside—gleaming faintly in the dim light—was the Golden Portrait, untouched and whole. But beside it lay folded maps, stacks of false identity papers, and a ledger listing shipments to France and beyond.

“Smuggling route,” Leila breathed, tracing the ink. “He wasn’t working alone—this reaches far across the sea.”
For a heartbeat the scale of it pressed in, colder than the stone around them—this wasn’t a vain professor hiding a trophy, it was a vein feeding something vast and unseen. The unease tightened, then settled into a hard, familiar line of purpose.
A floorboard creaked above them. Heavy, deliberate footsteps.
Josh motioned back toward the passage. “He’s come to check on his prize.”
They froze—trapped in the dark with the evidence while the thief waited directly above their heads.
